TRIQS City Spotlight: Southampton

For our latest edition of the TRIQS City Spotlight, we’re talking all about Southampton!

This comes following news this month that Southampton City Council has granted an £112m housing scheme – this will bring 384 new rental flats to a former gasworks site that has been derelict for the last 10 years.

The development, located next to Southampton FC’s ground St Mary’s Stadium, will also see commercial units on the ground floor, alongside communal facilities like a gym, bicycle workshop, co-working spaces and lounges. There is a keenness to preserve the history of the site within the development too.

In other Southampton projects, earlier this year the University of Southampton appointed Kier Group for their North East Quadrant development, with opening aimed for the 2027/28 academic year.

This flagship building will be home to next-generation teaching and learning, and will have a focus on student experience, wellbeing and sustainability, particularly in line with the university’s Sustainability Strategic Plan.

We always love to see rail developments, and in March, the Solent rail terminal was opened. The project, totalling £17.5m, strengthened the city’s position as a gateway for deep sea trade.

In a first for the Port of Southampton, an 18-acre facility was developed consisting of container storage with full maintenance and repair facilities, allowing for a 71% increase in daily services and 125% increase in containers that can be handled.

By improving efficiency within the terminal, this project will work towards the Net Zero by 2050 goal.

Some other projects that have caught our attention include the Bargate Quarter Scheme, which will bring more housing to the city centre, plus Graftongate’s new low-carbon industrial/logistics unit, which has recently been green lighted and is set for completion by Q1 of 2025.

This is just a snapshot of Southampton’s most exciting projects currently underway or recently completed, but let us know if there’s any more you would add!
