TRIQS City Spotlight: Manchester

For our latest edition of the TRIQS City Spotlight, which discusses the leading development projects in construction and quantity surveying, we will be looking at Manchester’s best construction projects currently underway.

This follows the news that Manchester City’s £300m stadium plans have been approved, which will see the Etihad Stadium extend its North Stand with 7900 new seats, as well as a new 3000 capacity fanzone with food and drinks outlets.

Alongside this, there will be a new TV studio, roof walk, 391-bed hotel, club shop and museum, and a new workspace for start-ups and other small businesses. A contractor is set to be appointed in October, so construction can begin in November.

Another Manchester construction development that caught our eye is the £18m boost given to Greater Manchester’s transport projects and infrastructure; this will help in their aim to create a London-style transport system outside the capital.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “Any extra support for our public transport system as it recovers from the pandemic is of course welcome and we appreciate the Secretary of State’s efforts in securing this.”

The Bee Network is also set to be launched in September, which brings Manchester’s buses under local control for the first time in 40 years.

Other notable Manchester construction projects include Co-op Live Arena – opening in December 2023, this 23,500 capacity venue will host music, sports, comedy and more, and promises to be “the most sustainable arena in the UK”.

The former site of Boddingtons Brewery is undergoing exciting construction; last year, Manchester College’s £93m city centre campus opened here, and now, 450 affordable homes are being built on the site too.

4 new skyscrapers are also coming to Manchester this year! Trinity Islands £741m buildings, including the second largest skyscraper in the city, will boast 2000 flats, a gym, bar, garden and a huge green space for the public.

These are just 5 of the Manchester construction projects that we think will have a huge impact on the city and the country, but if there’s any you think we missed, let us know!
